The Top of the World Charitable Foundation has been making an impact for over two decades - this marks our 23rd year hosting the event. Originally, it was created in memory of Lou Schisler from Rouse Chamberlin Homes, who passed in 2003. Thanks to generous support, we raised enough to send all three of his children to college. Since then, we've continued to support meaningful charitable causes.
We've long been connected to the Bucks/Montgomery Home Builders Association, with the event benefiting various organizations over the years. Last year, we became a stand-alone entity and have begun the process of applying for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Our Board of Directors, a dedicated team that's been together for years, now oversees all operations and remains committed to helping others through this event.
The outing is held annually at St. Michaels Harbour Inn in Maryland, hosted since the beginning by Buddy Harrison. The Harrison family has deep roots in St. Michaels and Tilghman Island. Thursday night features a signature Eastern Shore feast, and Friday brings our Rock Fish Tournament, with boats and captains provided by Buddy. Around 70 people attend each year. We don't profit from the registration - our proceeds come entirely from our generous sponsors!
This year, we're focusing close to home. One of our longtime board members, Dottie Fawcett, recently shared that her daughter, Trudi has been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma (Appendix Cancer), a rare form. This year's proceeds is to help Trudi's two children by opening TAP 529 College Savings accounts for their future.
Here is Trudi's story:
I've been diagnosed with Stage 4 Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma - a rare and aggressive form of cancer. My journey began in August 2022 with a trip to the ER that led to emergency surgery. Since then, I've undergone multiple surgeries, including a full hysterectomy and the removal of part of my colon and appendix. In April 2023, I was officially diagnosed with Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma, a rare subtype of cancer. I've been in continuous treatment ever since, including chemotherapy, regular CT scans, and more surgeries - all of which will be ongoing for the rest of my life, as there is currently no cure or chance of remission.
Despite these challenges, I remain grounded by my family. I've been married for 11 years and we are raising two incredible children - our 9 year old daughter and almost 7 year old son - who bring light and laughter into our lives every day. I live with the painful uncertainty of whether I'll witness my children's future milestones, but I continue to fight with everything I have. The love and support from my family, friends and community give me strength - and for that, I 'm deeply grateful.
